MANILA — Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., a prominent figure in Philippine politics, passed away on February 10, 2026, at the age of 89.

De Venecia served as Speaker of the House of Representatives for five separate terms across two long periods: from 1992 to 1998 during the 9th and 10th Congresses, and from 2001 to February 2008 during the 12th, 13th, and part of the 14th Congresses. He remains the only member of the House to hold the speakership for five terms, notably leading the “Rainbow Coalition” during President Fidel V. Ramos’s administration. He was removed from office on February 5, 2008.

6th District Congressman Salvador Aquino Pleyto expressed his sadness over De Venecia’s passing, recalling the friendship they shared during their years in public service.

De Venecia was widely recognized as one of the country’s prominent leaders. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to governance and public service.
