MANILA — For a while, it looked like Alex Eala was on her way to another memorable victory over a top-10 opponent.

Then, just when the Filipino tennis star appeared to have the momentum firmly in her hands, Amanda Anisimova turned the match around.

Eala’s impressive Cincinnati Open campaign ended heartbreakingly after the world No. 10 American rallied from a set down and overcame an early deficit in the deciding set to beat the Filipina, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the third round Tuesday (Manila time).

The defeat was particularly painful because Eala had already done the hard part.

The 21-year-old Filipina took the opening set, 6-4, and then broke Anisimova early in the third set to move ahead, 2-0.

For Filipino fans watching onsite and from thousands of miles away, another giant-killing performance seemed within reach.

But Anisimova refused to fold.

The American gradually regained control, broke back and reeled off six straight games to close out the match after two hours and 28 minutes.

It was a frustrating ending for Eala, who had built a reputation this season as one of the most dangerous players outside the traditional elite.

Remarkable stretch

Before facing Anisimova, Eala had won five consecutive matches against Top 10 opponents—a remarkable stretch that showed just how far the young Filipina has come.

That streak, however, ended against an opponent who absorbed Eala’s early pressure and eventually found the range with her powerful groundstrokes.

Anisimova herself acknowledged the difficulty of the assignment, describing Eala as a great player and a fighter. The American also noted the support Eala received from the crowd, saying she knew how loved the Filipina was.

And that support was impossible to miss.

Filipino fans have followed Eala in growing numbers throughout her breakthrough season, turning her matches into something that feels bigger than an ordinary tennis match.

There was disappointment online after the Cincinnati loss, but many fans also reminded one another that Eala’s progress should not be measured by a single defeat.

One sentiment repeatedly seen among Filipino supporters was essentially: heads up, Alex.

Others pointed to the bigger picture—Eala had just pushed another Top 10 player to three sets and, despite the loss, continued to show that she belongs on the biggest stages of women’s tennis.

The emotional connection between Eala and Filipino fans has become one of the most noticeable stories surrounding her rise.

After her Canadian Open victory earlier this month, Eala became emotional while thanking Filipinos for their support, telling them she was proud to be Filipino and expressing her love for her fellow countrymen. That moment resonated strongly online, with Filipino fans describing her words as heartfelt and moving.

That bond helps explain why every Eala match now carries an unusual level of attention back home.

But the Cincinnati defeat also offered a reminder of just how difficult life is at the highest level of professional tennis.

Eala was not simply beaten by a lower-ranked opponent having a good day. She lost to a Top 10 player who had enough experience and firepower to survive a difficult stretch and change the momentum of the match.

The Filipina actually showed flashes of the tennis that has made her one of the most exciting young players on the WTA Tour.

She moved well, defended aggressively and refused to give Anisimova easy points. At one point in the opening set, Eala was forced to chase the American from one side of the court to the other before Anisimova eventually sent a shot long. Eala capitalized and went on to claim the set.

But after leveling the match, Anisimova became increasingly difficult to contain.

Eala started the third set with a break and a 2-0 advantage, yet the American immediately answered.

From there, the momentum belonged almost entirely to Anisimova.

For Eala, it was another tough lesson against one of the world’s best.

For Filipino fans, it was another painful reminder that even the most promising campaigns can end suddenly in tennis.

Still, there is plenty for Eala to take from Cincinnati.

She entered the tournament as the No. 17 seed and the world No. 20 player, continuing to establish herself among the sport’s elite. Her run also came after she advanced to the third round when Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse retired while trailing, 6-1, 3-0.

World’s best

More importantly, Eala showed once again that she can stand toe-to-toe with the world’s best.

She may not have walked away from Cincinnati with another Top 10 victory.

But she left with something that has become increasingly familiar this season—the belief that she belongs.

And perhaps that is why, even after the painful loss, Filipino fans continued to rally behind her.

Because for Eala, the journey is no longer about proving that she can beat the best once.

She is now trying to prove that she can stay there.

And for a young Filipina who has already made history, there is still plenty of tennis left to play.
