MANILA — As the country observed the 129th death anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) reaffirmed that the hero’s teachings continue to influence their fulfillment of national mandates.
In a statement, AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said Rizal’s belief in integrity and principled leadership serves as a guiding force for the military in its role of protecting citizens and defending national sovereignty.
He said the AFP, founded in 1935, has long upheld the values Rizal championed, citing the enduring sacrifices of Filipino soldiers who remain vigilant in securing the nation’s borders across land, sea, and air. The armed forces celebrated their 90th anniversary earlier this month.
Separately, Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police organization honors Rizal’s heroism by recommitting to its duty of law enforcement anchored on honor, accountability, and service.
Nartatez stressed that the PNP’s reform agenda for a “Bagong Pilipinas” underscores its resolve to keep Rizal’s ideals at the core of its mission, ensuring faster, more trustworthy, and more compassionate public service.
