MANILA — Alex Eala delivered another historic performance at Wimbledon, storming back from a first-set loss to defeat Australia’s Maya Joint, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, and book her place in the tournament’s third round for the first time.
After dropping the opening set, Eala quickly adjusted her game by extending rallies, attacking Joint’s second serve, and forcing the Australian into a series of costly unforced errors. The momentum completely shifted in the second set before the Filipina produced a flawless display in the decider, blanking Joint to seal the impressive victory.
The win marks another landmark achievement for Philippine tennis, as Eala becomes the first Filipino in the Open Era to reach the third round of the prestigious Wimbledon singles tournament. Her latest triumph further cements her growing reputation as one of Asia’s brightest young tennis stars.
Eala also gained a measure of revenge after falling to Joint during their meeting in Eastbourne last year, crediting her resilience and improved mental approach for the turnaround.
Standing between Eala and a place in the Round of 16 is defending Wimbledon champion Iga Świątek, setting up the biggest match of the Filipina’s career as she continues her remarkable run on the grass courts of the All England Club. ia/
