MANILA — Reports circulating online claim that former Cotabato governor Nancy Catamco has been appointed as chairperson of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).
Catamco, who currently serves as a commissioner of the agency, has long been associated with initiatives supporting indigenous cultural communities. Her experience in both legislative and executive roles has positioned her as a prominent advocate for indigenous rights.
She previously served as governor of Cotabato and as representative of its 2nd District in Congress, where she pushed for measures aimed at improving the welfare and recognition of indigenous peoples, particularly in Mindanao.
The NCIP is the government body responsible for protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including securing ancestral domain claims, promoting self-governance, and preserving cultural traditions. Observers say Catamco’s appointment could influence the direction of the agency’s programs moving forward.
