MANILA, Philippines — The unprecedented expulsion of Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga from the House of Representatives has triggered questions about whether the veteran lawmaker can return to public office.

Following a vote by the House on June 2, Barzaga was formally removed from the chamber after being found to have committed repeated violations of House rules, according to the findings of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.

The action immediately ended his tenure as a member of Congress and created a vacancy in Cavite’s 4th District.

Government officials are expected to clarify how the vacant seat will be addressed, including the possibility of conducting a special election before the next regular polls.

While the expulsion is considered one of the strongest disciplinary actions available to the House, legal experts emphasize that it does not automatically erase a politician’s eligibility to run for office.

Unless another legal process results in his disqualification, Barzaga may still submit his candidacy for a future election and seek a return to government service.

The issue now shifts from the halls of Congress to the electorate. Any attempt at a political comeback would likely test public sentiment and determine whether voters are willing to give the former congressman another mandate.

For the moment, Barzaga’s seat is gone, but his political future remains a matter for voters—and future elections—to decide.
