MANILA — Electric tricycles are now prohibited from traveling along major highways in Metro Manila as authorities tighten the enforcement of traffic rules to ensure public safety.
Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao announced that the ban covers heavily used roads including EDSA, C-5 Road, Roxas Boulevard, and the corridor connecting Quirino Avenue to the South Luzon Expressway in Magallanes.
The LTO official said the restriction follows long-standing Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) regulations and complements provisions of national traffic laws.
Violators may face sanctions such as fines or confiscation of vehicles under Republic Act 4136 and Joint Administrative Order 2014-01.
Lacanilao stressed that e-trikes are not designed for high-speed traffic environments, noting that their presence on major highways could lead to congestion and increase the likelihood of accidents.
Despite the ban, he assured that the agency is mindful of the livelihood of e-trike drivers and the transport needs of commuters. The LTO is set to coordinate with Metro Manila local governments and industry groups to establish safer routes where e-trikes can operate lawfully.
